How many readers remember my cousins, Wilbur V. “Jack” Herron and his wife Mabel Edith (Phillips) Herron? They were involved in Maple Hill business and society for eight decades. I’m going to provide their family information and some interesting anecdotes from their lives within the next few days, but I’d like to hear your memories of them.
I took this photograph in 1969 in their living room. Uncle Jack, as I knew him, was still barbering in downtown Maple Hill. The dog so far as I know, was always just called “Pup.” Aunt Mabel owned and operated the Herron Grocery Store, later owned by Leah (Raine) and her husband Chester “Stubby” Mote. After selling the store, she became the relief operator at the Maple Hill Central Office. They were both in their 80s when this photograph was taken.
The golden eagle was shot on the Tod Ranch where it had been killing and partially eating baby calves. It was kept in the barber shop as long as I remember and in the early 1970s, he gave it to me. I kept it in my home for a number of years and then gave it to the Wabaunsee County Historical Society in Alma, where it is on exhibit today.
Lets all share our memories.
