Maple Hill, Kansas: Its History, People, Legends and Photographs

I just have to throw in these old photographs of my father, John “Tim” Clark with some of the fish he caught. My Grandmother, Mable R (Jones) Clark, (his mother) told me that he was so young when his Great Grandfather Lee “Deacon” Jones first took him fishing, that she had to send along a big dishtowel so Grandpa Jones could tie him to a tree. I don’t think there was any place my father would have rather been than fishing. He lived and loved it!!

The first photo is of Dad with a big carp he caught in Mill Creek. I think t was in 1927 or 1928 when he was 6 or 7. The second is a big flathead that he caught in Mill Creek. He caught most of his fish on a rod and reel, but also set lines on Mill Creek and the Kansas River. When Mill Creek was in flood and the overflow was running through the slough on both sides of the Rock Island Railroad tracks west of Maple Hill, you could always find my Dad out with his “gig” or three-pronged spear, fishing for carp. They were so boney they were not very good to eat, but they were fun to spear and fertilized the bank 🙂
