The Coming Nation published from 1895 until 1922. It was a political periodical that was established to support the principals of The Populist Party and after 1917 became one of many Socialist periodicals.

This except from a much larger article was written on October 5, 1912 by C. E. Russell. The larger article was a futuristic look at what farms and ranches in America were destined to become and detailed what might be done to make farming efficient and also what they termed, the incredible waste on farms and ranches.

Building Beef Factories:
We would put cattle on the level plains and redeem more rich river lands for cultivation. Socially, transportation systems would transport cattle for feeding as might be found most desirable.
This would permit the establishment of great beef factories such as the one operated by H. G. Adams of Maple Hill, Kansas. Its one of the nations largest and most modern.
The farm has four great concrete silos which store feed very effectively. Concrete is used in many of the other structures, which are powered by a huge steam engine.
The farm takes cattle from ranches in Oklahoma and Western Kansas, which are under the same ownership, and is selective in desirable breeds of cattle. The cattle are fed scientifically and therefore the cost of feeding is less than on the average farm. The economy of scale works in favor of Mr. Adams. A load of steers from his beef factory recently averaged 1,496 pounds per head and brought $10.50 per hundred weight in Kansas City.
Mr. Adams says hes not doing anything any other farmer cant do. Others would do well to pay heed to his system. This type operation will become part of “The Coming Nation.
