Maple Hill, Kansas: Its History, People, Legends and Photographs

Okay—here’s a great Throwback Thursday Video. This is a short clip of Super 8 film I took on March 20, 1967 when my maternal Grandmother, Mildred (McCauley) Corbin, celebrated her 65th birthday. The video was taken at a carry-in celebration in her home on Main Street, Maple Hill, Kansas. I think its interesting how much more everyone “dressed up” in those days for family get togethers. In the video are many of her five children and their spouses, as well as about all of her 16 grandchildren. The pretty lady in glasses who turns her head away from me and then relents, is Joan (Corbin) Andrews-Frazier, grandmother’s only surviving child. She celebrated her 90th birthday in January this year. Also in the video are her sister-in-law, Pearl McCauley from El Dorado, Kansas, her best friend, Bonnie Mitchell, and two mothers of her sons-in-laws, Gladys Justice and Fern Wild. If I could stop each frame, I could identify all of those as they appear but I don’t know how to do that in this situation. I’m making the film, so I’m not in the photos. I was the oldest grandchild of Mildred and Robert Corbin and I was 23 when this film was made. Those were happy gatherings and days!
