I hesitate to put these videos on Facebook, because there are very few people alive who know who the people in them are. Yet, there are people younger than me, who may be thrilled to see pictures of their relatives, no matter how distant they are.
In the summer of 1965, my Grandmother Mable R. (Jones) Clark and her first cousin Frank Shipp were visiting in her living room. I was present as I often was on such occasions. They concluded that there had never been a Jones Reunion and they asked me if I would serve as the temporary chair of an event that might be held that fall. I remember choosing the date because the Fellowship Hall was not yet air-conditioned, and everyone thought it would be a nice pleasant fall day—which it was.
I said I would and Grandmother Clark agreed to help by trying to find as many addresses for Jones Cousins as could be found. She also agreed to mail notices to our cousins which she did. We also invited a few inlaws and outlaws to attend but primarily, those who gathered in September 1965, were members of the Jones Family.
I arranged to have the reunion at the Maple Hill Community Congregational Fellowship Hall and we chose a Sunday in mid-September. I sat up the tables in a cross so that we might all be closer together. Everyone brought a covered dish or two to share and I furnished the drink.
I brought along my Super 8 movie camera and I took photographs of those that attended. Since the slip is long and I hadnt learned to take my time in panning the camera, it moves very quickly. It is impossible to tag people in the photographs, but I will attempt to name the people in each section so that viewers have some knowledge of who was present. In addition, to myself, Im sorry to say that I believe only two adults shown in the video are alive today: one is, my cousin Marian Shipp Holiday-Orton of Topeka and the other is Emily Glogau, daughter of Emil and Gladys Glogau. All the others have passed on to their reward—but all who are in the movie clip were at one time residents of Maple Hill, Kansas. All the members of the Jones Family are the descendants of Francis Marion and Roxanna Mary Mariah (Eaton) Jones, who had nine children that lived to be adults. All nine children were at one time during the late 1800s, residents of Wabaunsee County, Kansas. As best Im able, here is a description of what you are seeing:
In the opening scene, are members of the Glogau Family. Elva (Phillips) Glogau has white hair and is seated with her back to the camera. Her son, Emil Glogau is at the end of the table talking to his wife, Gladys Glogau. Across the table from Elva Glogau is Mabel (Phillips) Herron. Next to Elva Glogau, with his back to the camera is Elvas husband, Martin Glogau. The Glogaus lived in Paxico and operated the Paxico Hotel and then moved to Maple Hill, and operated the Windler Hotel. Katie (Glogau) Romick was a sister of Martin Glogaus. Behind Mabel (Phillips) Herron, wearing a black sleeveless dress, is Marian (Shipp) Holiday-Orton. Across the table, wearing a white dress and white earrings, is Marians mother, Opal (Nicely) Shipp, wife of Frank Shipp. Sitting next to Opal Shipp is Pauline Shipp Love, daughter of Frank Shipp. Next to Pauline is Emily Glogau, daughter of Emil and Gladys Glogau. Next to Emily, in a blue dress with dark hair, is Ida Olson Schutter, daughter of Opal (Nicely) Shipp. Sitting at the end of that portion of the cross is my paternal grandmother, Mabel (Jones) Clark. At the end of the cross is invited guest Mabel (Miller) Clark. Sitting next to her, with her back to the camera, is my maternal grandmother, Mildred (McCauley) Corbin, and next to Mildred is invited guest Bonnie (Thomas) Mitchell, friend of the family. Moving to the next section of the cross is Clayton Thomas, husband of Ida (Olsen) Thomas. Sitting to his right is Casey Jones, son of Leander and Jeanetta (Rinehardt) Jones. He is the half-brother of my paternal grandmother, Mabel (Jones) Clark. At the end of the table, with the white hair, is Frank Shipp, son of Thomas and Evangeline (Jones) Shipp. Sitting next to Frank Shipp on the opposite side of the table are my father, John Tim Clark and Merl Shipp, son of Frank Shipp.
I then change positions to the other side of the table where I take a much better view of Mable (Miller) Clark. We who grew up in Maple Hill always called her Mable Fred Clark, to distinguish her from my grandmother who was often called Mable Jim Clark. Next is my maternal grandmother Mildred (McCauley) Corbin and Bonnie (Thomas) Mitchell. Next to Bonnie Mitchell, is my mother, Lucille (Corbin) Clark, who was somehow not in the first clip. The camera then again shows Martin Glogau, his wife Elva Glogau, Emil Glogau, Gladys Glogau, and Mabel (Phillips) Herron. Then Ida Schutter, Marian Holiday-Orton, and Opan Shipp are shown, and new at the end of the table is Fleta (Marney) Jones, wife of Casey Jones.
I think I have everyone identified correctly by if not, please let me know and I will make changes. I hope you enjoy this clip from the past, now 50 years old.
