Maple Hill, Kansas: Its History, People, Legends and Photographs

This is a photograph of Henry Steele Romick and his wife Margaret (Oliver) Romick. He was born in 1860 in Sommerset, Pennsylvania and moved to Kansas with his parents, Henry Steele and Jane (Webb) Romick.

Warner Adams told me that his father, Franklin Adams, and Henry Steele Rommick, Jr. plowed around the lots in the new Maple Hill Townsite, prior to the auction in August 1887 when the lots were sold to the highest bidder.

Henry Steele Romick, Jr. and his brother, James Elmer Romick, then built the first livery barn in Maple Hill. It was actually the first building constructed on the new townsite. The photograph below shows Henry Steele Romick holding the horse and James Elmer Rock in the overcoat.

Henry Steele Romick married Margaret Elizabeth Oliver who was born in Roxboughshire, Scotland in 1867. They were the parents of: Joseph Henry born in 1888; Oliver Lyle born 1890, Mary Belle born in 1893, David Steele born in 1895, George Frederick born in 1900 and Margret Eleanor born in 1906.

Henry Steele and Margaret (Oliver) Romick bought the Rufus and Mary Smith farm on Mill Creek, south of Maple Hill, in 1918 and lived there the remainder of their lives. The farm was later the home of his son David Steele Romick and his wife Ellen Stenstrom Romick, and was sold to Melvin and Charlotte Deiter and is now the home of Tim Deiter and his family. Henry and Margaret Romick built the present house which has been remodeled several times.
